Punch Quest is an endless arcade horizontal racer in retro style. The main goal in the game is the same as in all other games of this genre – to go as far as possible. On the way you will have to destroy as many enemy monsters as possible and collect coins, for which you can buy improvements.
The main character is controlled by tapping on the screen. Tapping on the left side of the screen causes enemies to strike from below (apercote), and tapping on the right side of the screen causes enemies to strike forward. As the game progresses, the player gains special attacks that can be purchased for coins. Each special attack is unique and can be replaced by other attacks in the settings. Also in the game you can change the appearance of the main character and purchase improvements.
At first it may seem that this game is rather primitive – destroy enemies and don’t let yourself be destroyed, but as you start to get involved, it will turn out that everything is not so simple. To achieve high scores, you should be careful about picking up skills and upgrades, and keep a close eye on what’s happening on screen. You won’t get very far if you’re just pointing your fingers randomly at the screen.
Despite the limitations of the genre, the gameplay of Punch Quest is quite diverse. You can ride a dinosaur that emits killer laser beams from its mouth, turn into a crazy unicorn or a fireball.
Graphics and sound accompaniment of the game should be separately noted. They fully correspond to the genre of good old arcade games. Overpumped protagonist with big fists, cartoon monsters, half-destroyed gloomy but at the same time cute locations – all this makes you remember the games for 8-bit consoles. The music is not lagging behind and the sounds of which will melt the heart of an old-school gamer.
Punch Quest is a very fun game and is a true benchmark of the genre. Not only does it offer something new, but it does it in a very entertaining way and with beautifully realized graphics and music in the style of 80’s arcade games, where both characters and scenarios were developed with great care.
